Paul Hastings Adds Privacy and Data Security Thought Leader

June 06, 2013

New York, NY (June 6, 2013) - Paul Hastings LLP, a leading global law firm, announced today that Paul Schwartz, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, and a director of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology, has joined the firm as a special advisor to the firm’s Privacy and Data Security practice.

“Privacy and data security issues are becoming increasingly important in the global business community and are front and center with government regulators and policy-makers,” said William Sullivan, global chair of the Litigation practice at Paul Hastings. “We are one of a handful of firms that has built a global network of experts to help clients in this burgeoning area,” he added.

“It is an honor to be welcoming such a leader in the privacy and data security field to Paul Hastings,” said Behnam Dayanim, co-chair of the Privacy and Data Security practice at Paul Hastings. “Paul’s addition will bolster our ability to help our clients with their most complex international data privacy and security challenges. He also will bring a thoughtful and creative approach to navigating the legal challenges presented by the emergence of ‘Big Data’ and the explosion of mobile and other new technologies,” he added.

Mr. Schwartz is a leading international expert on information privacy, data security, and information law. He continues to teach at UC Berkeley School of Law, where his courses include one of the nation’s pioneering courses in information privacy law. His scholarship focuses on how the law has sought to regulate, shape, and limit information technology. Mr. Schwartz has written important papers on a broad range of topics including European Union privacy regulations, cloud computing, governmental data mining, federal preemption of state privacy laws, and the different legal definitions of “personal information.” He has testified before Congress and served as an advisor to the Commission of the European Union and other international organizations. He assists numerous corporations with regulatory, policy, and governance issues relating to information privacy.

Paul Hastings has made significant investments in the privacy and data security space, adding Thomas Brown as a partner in January 2012 and bringing on Behnam Dayanim in October 2012.

Mr. Schwartz’s arrival follows the addition of two Litigation partners in March, Sam Cooper who joined the practice in Houston and Nathaniel Edmonds, who joined in Washington, DC.
