Paul Hastings Expands Litigation Practice with Addition of Assistant U.S. Attorney

New York, New York (October 6, 2010) Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP, a leading global law firm, announced today that Maria Douvas has joined the firm as of counsel in the Litigation Department. She is based in the firms New York office. Ms. Douvas joins from the United States Attorneys Office in the Southern District of New York where she served for six years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division and was a member of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force.

Maria brings considerable depth to our growing securities litigation and white collar practices, said Jamie Wareham, Global Chair of Paul Hastings Litigation Department. Her experience handling investigations and prosecutions involving Ponzi schemes, accounting fraud, insider trading and fraud in connection with the structuring and marketing of collateralized debt obligations will enhance the scope of services we offer to clients.

During her tenure in the U.S. Attorneys Office, Ms. Douvas provided counsel in numerous securities fraud investigations and prosecutions brought by multiple parties including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Office of the New York Attorney General as well as bankruptcy trustees and court-appointed examiners and receivers. She has tried nine criminal cases and collectively, briefed and argued 15 appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Prior to joining the U.S. Attorneys Office, Ms. Douvas was an attorney in private practice where she represented individuals and entities in government enforcement matters, internal investigations and compliance. She earned her J.D. cum laude, Order of the Coif, from the University of Pennsylvania and received a B.A. in History from Columbia University.
