Paul Hastings Continues IP Growth in Washington, DC with Leading Post-Grant Proceedings Partner

July 14, 2014

Washington, DC - Paul Hastings LLP, a leading global law firm, announced today that Joseph Palys has joined the Intellectual Property practice in Washington, DC as a partner. Mr. Palys joins from Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, where he was a partner. Mr. Palys has an extensive practice representing companies in post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and was previously a supervisory patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO).

“Joe’s background as a supervisory patent examiner at the PTO and his track record as an IP litigator with extensive experience in post-grant proceedings will help Paul Hastings continue to build a leading Patent Office practice,” said Joseph O’Malley, co-chair of the Intellectual Property practice at Paul Hastings. “The recent arrival of Naveen Modi, coupled with Joe coming on board is a big boost to the practice, given both lawyers are considered to be leaders in post-grant proceedings. Given the relative shortage of talent in this area and the high demand from clients, we expect this will be a growth area for the firm,” he added.

“We continue to invest in our Litigation practice, and build on the strength of our IP practice,” said Barry Sher, chair of the Litigation practice at Paul Hastings. “Joe’s addition not only complements the additions we have made in the Washington, DC office, but the cross-border nature of his work, which includes a significant client base in Asia, highlights the increasingly global profile of our Litigation practice,” he added.

Mr. Palys focuses his patent practice on post-grant proceedings, litigation, prosecution, portfolio monetization and management, and client counseling. His technical experience is primarily in the areas of software, business methods, financial services, computer, network, and electro-mechanical technologies. He leans on his more than twenty years of patent experience to counsel small to very large clients on reexamination, post-grant review, and inter partes review proceedings implemented under the America Invents Act (AIA), and to provide infringement, validity, and product clearance opinions. He also has extensive experience in assessing, developing, implementing, and managing patent portfolios.

Mr. Palys's litigation practice includes representing clients in patent infringement cases in U.S. district courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), and in appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His cases involve complex technologies, such as microprocessor and digital signal processing systems, computer architectures, mobile device communications, touch screen technologies, Internet-related technologies, operating systems, and business software.

Paul Hastings is a leading global law firm with a strong presence throughout Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States. Through a collaborative approach, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to client service, the professionals of Paul Hastings deliver innovative solutions to many of the world’s top financial institutions and Fortune 500 companies.
