March 26, 2025
Paul Hastings Global Co-Chair of International Arbitration Jonathan C. Hamilton addressed trends in globalization and was honored at a symposium celebrating the 65th anniversary of the Virginia Journal of International Law at the University of Virginia School of Law.
The journal announced plans for an annual “world-class” colloquium honoring Hamilton, a former editor-in-chief and longtime member of the board of advisors of the publication. The Jonathan C. Hamilton Colloquium on Globalization will welcome leaders of international arbitral institutions, international organizations and government agencies, as well as distinguished law professors and practitioners.
Virginia Law Dean Leslie Kendrick highlighted Hamilton’s leadership in guiding the future of the journal for over two decades. The UVA Lawyer featured his journey from law student to leading international lawyer in a previous article profiling him as “A Vigilante of International Arbitration,” in a nod to the international law journal’s nickname, “VJIL.”
As part of his remarks at the symposium, Hamilton said, “Law is politics,” citing his international law casebook during law school. “Globalization is in flux. In this context, now more than ever, the Virginia Journal of International Law really matters.”
The Virginia Journal of International Law is the oldest continuously published student journal of international law and was ranked in a 2024 empirical study as the world’s top student-run international law journal and a top international law publication overall. According to the journal, it has published articles by dozens of authors from six continents over the years. Read more here.
