May 04, 2023

By Kimia Favagehi

On Wednesday, May 10, the Paul Hastings Data Privacy and Cybersecurity group will host the Cybersecurity Law Workshop at this spring’s Privacy+Security Forum. The workshop will feature leading experts and highlight the latest cybersecurity developments including discussion on pending regulations, best practices around breach disclosures, and the overlap between cybersecurity and privacy issues.

The workshop will consist of three different panels, and will be moderated by Aaron Charfoos, Global Chair of the Data Privacy and Cybersecurity group.

PANEL 1: A TOUR THROUGH RECENT CYBERSECURITY DEVELOPMENTS

This panel will provide an overview of new and current cybersecurity rules, primarily originating from the Securities Exchange Commission and New York Department of Financial Services, which will affect U.S. companies. It will involve a discussion on details of the regulations as well as steps that companies should be taking to prepare for compliance.

Panelists include: Jeremy Berkowitz (Senior Director and Deputy Chief Privacy Officer, Paul Hastings LLP) and Daniel Sutherland (Director and Associate General Counsel, Meta).

PANEL 2: EVOLVING EXPECTATIONS AROUND PUBLIC DISCLOSURES OF BREACHES

This panel will discuss evolving expectations around public disclosures of data breaches. Customers, security researchers, regulators, and everyone in between expect consistent communications throughout the course of investigations as well as once they are completed. Panelists will highlight the “do’s and don’ts” of communicating with stakeholders in the midst of incidents.

Panelists include: Mark Seifert (Partner, Brunswick Group) and Aruna Sharma (Global Head of Privacy & Regulatory Affairs, Bytedance)

PANEL 3: A DISCUSSION OF THE OVERLAPPING RESPONSIBILITIES BETWEEN COMPANIES' PRIVACY AND SECURITY FUNCTIONS

This panel will discuss the overlap between privacy and information security laws and how companies can effectively leverage internal resources to design an integrated and synergistic privacy compliance program.

Panelists include: Jacqueline Cooney (Senior Privacy Director and Chief Privacy Officer, Paul Hastings) and Crystal Ferguson (Senior Privacy Program Manager, Paramount).

The Privacy+Security Forum is hosted twice a year by Daniel Solove and Paul Schwartz, and brings together leading experts in the areas of privacy and security law. This spring’s Forum will take place from May 10-12 in Washington, D.C. If you have any questions about the Cybersecurity Law Workshop, please do not hesitate to contact any member of our team.
