Quarterly Report: Total Household Debt Increases in Q1 2022, Driven by Mortgage and Auto Balances

May 10, 2022

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Center for Microeconomic Data today issued its Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit. The report shows a solid increase in total household debt in the first quarter of 2022, increasing by $266 billion (1.7%) to $15.84 trillion. The Bank staff have also published a Liberty Street Economics blog post analyzing the data.

CFTC Issues Proposed Rule to Modify Swap Clearing Requirement to Address Transition from LIBOR and Other Interbank Offered Rates to Alternative Reference Rates

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission today unanimously voted to approve a notice of proposed rulemaking to modify the Commission's interest rate swap clearing requirement to remove certain clearing requirements tied to the London Interbank Offered Rate and other interbank offered rates, and replace them with similar clearing requirements for swaps referencing overnight, nearly risk-free reference rates.

Financial Trades Support Modified SEC Cyber Incident Disclosure Proposal to Aid Law Enforcement and Support Remediation Efforts

The American Bankers Association, Bank Policy Institute, Independent Community Bankers of America and Mid-Size Bank Coalition of America commented on a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission proposal that would implement new requirements for financial institutions to disclose material cyber incidents, as well as cybersecurity risk management, strategy and governance.

The European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB) signed a Guarantee Agreement through which the European Commission will support up to €26.7 billion of EIB financial operations to enable public investments in sectors like clean energy, digital and transport infrastructure, health and education over the next seven years.
