CFPB Orders Tech Companies to Turn Over Information on their Payment System Plans

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) issued a series of orders to collect information on the business practices of large technology companies operating payments systems in the United States. The information is intended to help the CFPB better understand how these firms use personal payments data and manage data access to users so the CFPB can ensure adequate consumer protection.

On October 8, an historic agreement was reached between 136 countries of the OECD-G20 Inclusive Framework – representing 94% of the world's GDP – on a two Pillar package of reforms to the international tax framework to be implemented in 2023. In support of this agreement, the United States, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom have announced the terms of an agreement on the transition from existing digital services taxes to the new multilateral solution.

As a result of the new policies, senior Federal Reserve officials will be limited to purchasing diversified investment vehicles, like mutual funds.

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board approved two items at its ninth open meeting of 2021: 1) A final rule that adds the sensitivity to market risk or "S" component to the existing CAMEL rating system and redefines the liquidity risk or "L" component; and 2) a final rule that expands the list of permissible activities and services credit union service organizations, or CUSOs, are allowed to engage in.

Report: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report Update

In the week ending October 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 290,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's revised level. This is the lowest level for initial claims since March 14, 2020 when it was 256,000. The previous week's level was revised up by 3,000 from 293,000 to 296,000. The 4-week moving average was 319,750, a decrease of 15,250 from the previous week's revised average. This is the lowest level for this average since March 14, 2020 when it was 225,500. The previous week's average was revised up by 750 from 334,250 to 335,000.
