New Support for Nursing Moms

July 13, 2017

Katrina Burrows, Manager, Talent Management

In June of this year, Paul Hastings partnered with Milk Stork to support our benefit-eligible working moms.  Milk Stork provides a special insulated shipping container that keeps freshly expressed milk cool during overnight shipping and delivered safely to the nursing baby.
How does Milk Stork work?

  1. Your Milk Stork cooler is shipped directly to your hotel. Most hotels will have your order waiting for you when you arrive.

  2. If shipping, most hotels allow you to mail your pre-labeled and post-paid package from the lobby.

  3. Pump and pack your breast milk into your cooler unit from the privacy of your hotel room.

  4. Receive automatic shipping updates via email. You’ll be notified as soon as your milk arrives home.

CDC guidelines say that freshly expressed milk may be safely consumed when stored in clean, tightly sealed containers at room temperature (up to 77 degrees) for up to six to eight hours or in insulated cooler bags (roughly 5 to 39 degrees) with ice packs for up to 24 hours. Refrigerated milk (roughly 39 degrees) may be consumed for up to five days.  When dealing with sick babies, it is recommended that expressed milk be consumed for up to four hours at room temperature and four days after immediate refrigeration.

According to the CDC 2016 Breastfeeding Report Card, breastfeeding rates continue to rise with 81.1% of women breastfeeding (ever).  The American Academy of Pediatrics reinforces the conclusion that breastfeeding and the use of human milk confer unique nutritional and non-nutritional benefits to the infant and the mother and, in turn, optimize infant, child, and adult health as well as child growth and development.

Support for new parents in the workplace is an important initiative for the Firm.  Each one of the Firm’s offices provides a comfortable “wellness room” for nursing moms.  The partnership with Milk Stork reinforces the Firm’s continued commitment to being an employer of choice.
