Jay Darden Named 2023 White Collar “MVP” by Law360

November 08, 2023

Paul Hastings Investigations & White Collar Defense partner Jay Darden has been named among Law360’s 2023 “MVPs” for White Collar. Mr. Darden was recognized for his work successfully defending international clients from complex, high-stakes investigations over the past year.

Mr. Darden said his biggest accomplishment, and greatest challenge, over the past year was representing ABB Ltd., a Swiss engineering and technology company, in multiple corruption investigations in the United States, South Africa, Switzerland, and Germany, including as defense counsel for investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and as the international coordinating counsel for the investigations in the other countries. Due to what U.S. authorities referred to as “extraordinary” cooperation during the course of the investigations, the company reached a resolution without having to enter a parent-level guilty plea or go through a third-party compliance monitorship.

In addition to the high-profile ABB matter, Mr. Darden noted that he was proud of the much lower-profile representation of PH client CEMIG, a Brazilian power company, in which both the DOJ and SEC closed their investigations of CEMIG without taking any action against the company.

"You can never guarantee a particular outcome in a case, but I do think our practice and our reputation in the white collar community here in D.C. can ensure that our clients’ stories get heard, and get understood, and get presented to the government in the best way possible,” Mr. Darden said.

Law360's “MVPs” are attorneys who have distinguished themselves from their peers over the past year through high-stakes litigation, record-breaking deals, and complex global matters.
